Enjoy the Spirit of Giving this Christmas – make the most of volunteering opportunities
Christmas is just around the corner, and although things may be a bit different this year, the festive spirit is as strong as ever.
For some of us, we celebrate Christmas in a big way. For others, less so. But whatever your feelings are about Christmas itself, the fundamentals of this time of year – spending time with loved ones and helping those in need – ring true for all of us.
Although Christmas is traditionally viewed as a time to enjoy yourself and have fun, for many people, this is not their reality. People struggle at this time of year for a variety of reasons – for example, they may be homeless and not have anywhere to spend Christmas.
This year there is also the added worry of the shadow of COVID-19 hanging over us, and there may be those who can’t spend the festive season with their families as they usually would, due to illness, self-isolation and shielding.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. If you can give some of your time towards helping others, this is the perfect time to get involved with volunteering and charity work.
Whether you’re helping out at your local food bank or lending a hand at a shelter for the homeless – every little helps. It’s also worth remembering that if you are planning on going to university, you can add these types of activities to your personal statement. Universities will love to see that you have gone out of your way to help others.
If you’re pushed for time this year, donating to charitable causes is a great way to share that festive spirit. Donations don’t necessarily have to be financial – you could donate items to a food bank, or gift unwanted clothes to charities that support those in need.
